Artist Biography
From the The Isle of Enchantment and born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Angel showed an early interest in fashion. He began his journey in 1993 at the International Fine Arts College in Miami, Florida.
His career in fashion began when, in 1998, he won the Kermesse de la Moda, or Fashion Competition, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The attention brought from his win allowed Angel the opportunity to work with TV personalities, musicians, and other noted performers on the island. Angel also won the prestigious Paoli Award for 1999 as the Puerto Rico designer of the year. The Paoli Award is the highest distinction award for the arts on the island.
Angel’s designs graced the most beautiful beauty queens for Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Petite, and Miss International in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the USA. Angel was also recognized and awarded for his contribution to the island’s culture by the Chamber of Representatives from the government of Puerto Rico. In 2001, the Mayor of Ponce, Rafael Cordero Santiago, bestowed the title of “Distinguished Merchant from Ponce Town” upon Angel for his success in fashion and business.
In 2008, Angel set up a home base in Indianapolis, Indiana, to continue his journey in the fashion industry and carve out a niche of haute couture - designed, sewn, and presented to all the fashion-conscious.
Working closely with local and national artists, consulting with designers to bring their visions to manufacturing, and collaborating with larger companies, Angel has broadened his impact and deepened his relationships with the art community at large. At home in Indiana, out of the state, and back to his roots in Puerto Rico, Angel continues to innovate and bring his fresh perspective on the art of fashion.

Artist Statement
I am delighted to introduce you to one of my latest couture creations, an abstract gown titled "Madre Bahia," which translates to "Mother Bay." This piece is a deeply personal and artistic homage, profoundly inspired by the extraordinary and increasingly endangered bioluminescent waters found in Puerto Rico. My intention was to encapsulate the sublime and ephemeral beauty of this natural phenomenon into a wearable art form.
"Madre Bahia" is conceived as an immersive sartorial experience. The design gracefully interprets the profound serenity of the night sky, with carefully selected stones intricately placed to evoke the scattered brilliance of stars. This cosmic expanse then descends into the majestic depths of the ocean, symbolically represented by the flowing, voluminous train of the skirt. The true essence of the bioluminescent bay is captured within the inner skirt, where an innovative fusion of fiber optics and shimmering metallic organza ruffles creates a breathtaking effect. This intricate detailing mimics the ethereal glow and swirling motion of the living water, producing a luminous, otherworldly shimmer that animates the garment with every movement.
This creation by Angel Olivera Couture is more than just a garment; it is a narrative woven in fabric and light, celebrating the delicate balance and awe-inspiring beauty of our natural world.
