Artist Biography
Born on the Isle of Enchantment and in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Ángel showed an early interest in fashion. He began his journey in 1993 at the International Fine Arts College in Miami, Florida.
His career in fashion began when, in 1998, he won the Kermesse de la Moda, or Fashion Competition, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The attention his win brought Ángel the opportunity to work with TV personalities, musicians, and other noted performers on the island. Ángel also won the prestigious Paoli Award for 1999 as the Puerto Rico designer of the year. The Paoli Award is the highest distinction award for the arts on the island.
Ángel’s designs graced the most beautiful beauty queens for Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Petite, and Miss International in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the USA. Ángel was also recognized and awarded for his contribution to the island’s culture by the Chamber of Representatives from the government of Puerto Rico. In 2001, the Mayor of Ponce, Rafael Cordero Santiago, bestowed the title of “Distinguished Merchant from Ponce Town” upon Angel for his success in fashion and business.
In 2008, Ángel set up a home base in Indianapolis, Indiana, to continue his journey in the fashion industry and carve out a niche of haute couture - designed, sewn, and presented to all the fashion-conscious.
Working closely with local and national artists, consulting with designers to bring their visions to manufacturing, and collaborating with larger companies, Ángel has broadened his impact and deepened his relationships with the art community at large. At home in Indiana, out of the state, and back to his roots in Puerto Rico, Ángel continues to innovate and bring his fresh perspective on the art of fashion.

Artist Statement
I am delighted to introduce you to two of my latest couture creations, an abstract gown titled Madre Bahía and an intricate shawl titled Sra. Tortuga. These pieces are a deeply personal and artistic homage, profoundly inspired by the extraordinary and increasingly endangered bioluminescent waters of Puerto Rico and by the natural connections I have to my life in Indiana.
Madre Bahía was conceived as an immersive sartorial experience. My intention was to encapsulate the sublime and ephemeral beauty of this natural phenomenon into a wearable art form. The design gracefully interprets the profound serenity of the night sky, with carefully selected stones intricately placed to evoke the scattered brilliance of the stars. This cosmic expanse descends into the ocean’s majestic depths of the ocean, represented by the skirt’s flowing, voluminous train. The true essence of the bioluminescent bay is captured in the inner skirt, an innovative fusion of fiber optics and shimmering metallic organza ruffles that create a breathtaking effect. The skirt mimics the ethereal glow and swirling motion of the living water, producing a luminous, otherworldly shimmer that animates the garment with every movement.
Sra. Tortuga was created using the native turtle of Indiana, the eastern box turtle, as inspiration. The image of the turtle was broken down to teach the beauty of its forms, the perfect pattern that its nature gives it and the appreciation of its preservation. The gems embedded in the fabric sparkle as the Sra. Tortuga "is going to party"!
